The NaNo Contestant

Fiction, NaNoWriMo, Blogging

Just another update…

Well, it’s the middle of August, and I’m plowing through some more freelance work, Just picked up a hefty editing job, and had to drop one because I knew there was no way I could do it any justice. I’ve got a total of three jobs I’ve got placed in front of me, and I’m slowly working through them.

In the meantime, I’m also reading up on other freelance writer’s, and what they do. I want to see what others do, how they function, and how successful they’ve become in their line of work. I’ve found one guy so far, but I’d like to potentially look into more before I just go off on a whim. I’m willing to try anything to get the success I want.

That being said, I have every intention of doing NaNoWriMo this November, and I’m hoping that maybe I’ll even join in some contests as well. I’m looking to start expanding my portfolio into a wider variety of things. I’ve got a series of non-fictional pieces lined up for my own personal use, as well as some fictional pieces. I’m hoping that it’ll boost my credibility in places like Upworks and Elance. We’ll just have to see.

So, I finished book one of  this ten-book freelance project I’ve done.

It still needs to be edited through, but I’m beginning that process tomorrow, after my appointment with the dietician (ugh). I’m on my way to greatness here!

Just kidding. But I am on my way to book two, which hopefully won’t have another technological setback like the last one. I’ve got a few details already, but I need to work out the rest. Also, I should probably get some sleep before beginning another project, and utilize the last of my 30 day timeframe to make sure the book is 100% ready.

In the meantime, I’ve been applying here and there- I decided to slow down on the applications, and start building my portfolio. I think I’d like to write a few essays and short stories, maybe a couple of poems (like that’ll turn out decent, psh.). I need to show what I am capable of, and then maybe people would be more willing to hire me.

So, with that being said, I need to create a list of ideas for my new portfolio, and start writing them. Maybe this is the right push I’ll need to reinvent my life, and become the writer I’ve always wanted. Wish me luck, guys. I’m going to need it.

Freelance Update and my phone

So, after spending the majority of my weekend apply for freelance jobs over two different websites using what resources I could, I haven’t gotten a single job offer sense then. However, I’ve gotten quite a lot of work done on the first freelance project I received, and I plan on making the best of it. I’ve got a lot of things to do, so I’d like to really work my tail end off on getting this done, so I can jump ahead and hopefully catch up in time for NaNoWriMo.

In the meantime, my own novel projects have suffered, but I’m kind of stuck at the same time, so it’s been nice to be able to walk away from the book and figure a few things out through other means of writing. I also need to build up my portfolio, so I think this week I’m going to take a break from applying like a madwoman to certain jobs, and just start cranking out a whole bunch of short stories to see if I can get more published, and more added to my portfolio. I want to enter a few contests with Writer’s Digest as well, to see if I can add those to my portfolio. I’m probably going to build a portfolio website right on whatever website/blog takes me, and see where I can go from there.

In the meantime, my phone thought it would feel good to go for a swim in the toilet. And deep-sea dive straight to the bottom while it was at it. There was a cool little tunnel it saw, and went right for it. So, now it’s currently hanging out on top of my refrigerator where it’s attempting to dry out. No, I’m not going to use the rice trick. I don’t see how the rice even works. The water is inside my phone, and the rice is outside of it. That won’t do me any good. If not, I’m buying the one on Amazon that I saw, because as a Type One, I should really have phone on me if I wind up passing out and someone needs to contact my parents.

With that being said, I’m going to find a way to plan out my weeks so that my giant to-do list will pan out, and even things up in my life. I’m totally overwhelmed, but I’m trying to reinvent everything about myself with a new opportunity, and I don’t want to wait. That’ll drop the motivation, and I won’t ever finish. So, here’s to having nothing to lose, guys!

i decided to upgrade the MacBook air into an iMac 21 inch screen. I’m loving the size of the screen so much better. It’s easier to write on, and I can see so much better. My work will not suffer with a tiny screen. i’ve also bought a new desk and chair at Big Lots to host my new toy.

As for my freelance work, I’m beginning to catch up. I’ve gotten about two chapters written today, and I’ve applied to a giant pile of jobs as well, which I hope to hear from soon. In  the meantime, I’m hoping that jobs will start coming in sooner.

I’ve been a little under the weather this week, and as a result, I’ve wound up with two days off my job. Good for the health, bad for the paycheck. Ah, well. I’ll probably make up for it by working more hours than I ever wanted next week.

I’ll keep everyone else updated, but I’m debating on switching over to a new, improved, and better blog. One that’ll incorporate a lot more, and will kind of house different aspects of my life. I haven’t 100% made my mind up yet, but it’ll happen before it’s time to renew my domain name this year. I’m going to plan out what I want, and the basic concepts behind my new blog, and I’ll probably let everyone know the new location before the year is through, provided I decide to make the switch. I want to add some better and new content to it, amongst other things. Just bear with me for the moment, because I’ve got a pile in my inbox stacked to the ceiling, and I have to power through my overwhelming to do list. Sometimes, this diabetes really kicks my butt, and other days, I’m motivated and on top of the world. Soon, that should get better as I get a better grip on my new life.

Well, I better go apply for some more freelance work before I’m too tired and burnt out to do anymore. See you guys next post.

So, I continue to fall behind in freelance work, and apply for it all at the same time.

Cause that’s a good idea, right? Hahahaha, no, it’s the worst thing ever. However, some of the work I can crank out easily, quickly, and correctly in a few days. The other thing is a month-long project, and I lost the file when I lost my computer. It was one of the few files that couldn’t be saved. Which royally stinks, but what am I going to do? I’ll have to start over.

In the meantime, I plan on upgrading my Mac. I like the Air, but the computer itself is a little small. It’s an 11.6″ screen. The keyboard gets kind of annoying too. The nice thing is, I’ll only have to pay the difference between my computer, and the nice little MacBook Pro I intend to get.

I guess I better go cram lunch down my throat, then start cracking on this work that i’ve already done. Ah, well. Maybe it’ll come out better the second time around.

So, my Elitebook bit the dust.

It lasted a good three years, but it wouldn’t let me log into my administrators account. i saved my files in safe mode, but I have to restore my computer to factory settings to make it work. In the meantime, I bought a whole new computer. I went for a MacBook air, because why not.

The screen’s only 11 inches, and it’s super light. I’m going to eventually invest in a keyboard and mouse, but right now I don’t have the rest of the money needed to buy them (if you know where to get them cheaper, that could be helpful.).

During that time, I’ve lost two days of writing. That happened Monday, and it’s now Wednesday. So, I need to go work on my freelance work, and work on getting more.

Well, figured I’d give a little update. I’ll see you all later.

Freelance Writing

It’s official- I’m a part-time freelance writer.

I decided to try my hand at freelance writing. I signed up at a few websites, and began sending in proposals. I got one where I wrote about freestyle rapping, and I’m working on another series that’s a Western Historical Romance. I’ve never done romance, so this is a first. So far, it’s going smoothly. I’m excited to get some commissions.

My dream right now is to start freelancing enough that I could very easily quit my job, and go full time. For the concerns of a lack of car, my health, and the fact that writing is my dream job, would be the reasons why I really want to do this. This is what I live for, and of course I’ll still work on my own novels for publishing.

I’m going to attempt to create some advertising as well, so that I can build up my career as a freelance writer. In the meantime, I’ll still be chasing around two year olds and changing dirty diapers to pay the medical bills.

I’ll see you in the next post.

My life so far

I need to tell my readers this, now before I chicken out.

On April 30, I was hospitalized at Beaumont Health System, where I was stuck in the ER for hours, then dropped into ICU for three days. I discovered there that I was suffering an illness called Diabetic Ketoacidosis. In other words, I was going into a diabetic coma. I dropped 35-40 lbs between February and the very end of April (when I was sent to the hospital). I lost even more in the hospital because I couldn’t eat for a few days. Essentially, it turns out I’m a Type 1 diabetic.

It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

I eat soooo healthy now. I mean, I actually eat salads. I watch my carbs, and I look amazing. My body looks better than it ever has, and I feel good about it. It’s a beautiful opportunity to reinvent myself. That includes in all aspects of my life. After that, I dropped out of college. I don’t intend to go back, if I can help it.

Not only am I expanding my wardrobe and changing my eating habits, I’ve decided that I know that my education is important, and I know what I’d like to study. So therefore, I’m taking education into my own hands, where I’ll learn anything and everything that I’ve ever wanted to study.

I’ve also discovered online freelance writing jobs, and I’m looking into writing my heart out, even buying a small laptop to work from when I travel. I can’t wait for that to take off. If it works out well enough, I’ll probably apply to a pile of jobs, and quit the one I currently work at. On top of writing for work, I’ll continue to write my own projects for publication.

Now that I’ve told everyone what’s happened to me, and how I’ve felt better than ever…what’s going on in your lives?

Writing Advice

Today’s topic will be a piece of advice. Advice I’ve learned over the many years I’ve worked and re-worked the same story.

Don’t give up. Keep writing. If it doesn’t look good, write a portion of it different to how you normally would. Take a different character’s point of view. Change a romantic pairing. Kill a different character. You’ll be surprised at how much that can change things.

My current Work In Progress (WIP) didn’t start off in the Point Of View (POV) of the Main Character (MC). In fact, the previous MC was the best friend to the current MC. I changed things around quite a lot. Seth, my current MC, was different in the first draft. Before I finished draft two, I overhauled the entire novel and changed things drastically. Even the ending is different. It was good motivation, and I’m already getting closer and closer to where I want to be (the end). In about six months I’m halfway through the book. Last time, It took me over a year to get to the end of the original draft.

Sometimes, when you’re really struggling, or when you really are stuck, it’s a good exercise to keep your brain going, and sometimes you’ll find that it’s what your story needed to go from good, to fantastic.
